At least five residents were forced from their homes after a late-night fire in Victoria on Wednesday.

Victoria firefighters were called just past 11 p.m. to a residence at 2220 Shelbourne St. When they arrived, the blaze could be seen through two windows near the rear of the home.

With 16 firefighters and five trucks at the scene, the fire was quickly knocked down, according to Battalion Chief Brian Elvedahl.

Damage was contained to the top floor of the home, but smoke and water damage throughout the building affected multiple suites and displaced at least five residents, who sought help from the Red Cross.

The estimated damage is $250,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Following the fire, Elvedahl reminded owners and tenants to have up-to-date insurance for their valuables.
