Toronto roots rock institution Skydiggers roll into town for a two-night stand at the Railway Club, May 2 and 3. And guess what, the band has a new album called Northern Shore, which follows 2009’s The Truth About Us, an anthology that spans Skydiggers’ 20-plus-year career. Reid Jamieson opens both nights. All good things must come to an end, or at least take the summer off. Vancouver’s only live televised variety show Paul Anthony’s Talent Time joins the Canucks in their golfing endeavours, but not without one last blow-out May 2, 9 p.m. at the Biltmore. It’s a doozey of a show, spanning the generations, with child mariachi band Los Castorcitos, seniors choir Express Your Voice, mime Dianna David, 20-piece Langley Ukulele Ensemble, 10-year-old yoyo whiz Alex Skelly, comedian Paul Hooper and the ever popular cover-charge piñata. With a Juno Award for New Group of the Year and their recently released third studio album, Little Mountain, under their poppy belts, Vancouver’s conquering indie heroes Said the Whale return from a Western Canadian jaunt to play the Vogue Theatre May 3.
