Talented singer-songwriter and one-half of the musical duo She & Him, M. Ward plays the Commodore Ballroom Aug. 30 with guest Mike Coykendall. Ward’s latest release for Merge Records, A Wasteland Companion, finds the Portland-based troubadour ambling through enjoyably familiar territory, putting his own spin on old-time rock and roll, dreamy folk and barebones balladry. Feeling horny? The 44-year-old-and-counting horn section humbly known as Tower of Power unleashes its arsenal of R&B grooves and syncopated moves on the sweaty, middle-aged masses Aug. 29, 8 p.m. as part of the PNE Summer Nights concert series. Admission free with entry to the PNE.
Combining two of our favourite things—snakes and exotic women from the 1940s (OK, one of our favourite things), 1944’s cult movie classic Cobra Woman, starring Maria Montez, slithers into Pacific Cinematheque Aug. 29, 9:30 p.m. The tiki-tastic tale of snake worship and human sacrifice on a volcanic South Seas island screens as part of the theatre’s 100 Years of Universal Pictures series. For more info, go to cinematheque.bc.ca.
Depending on whom you ask, the Protomen are either from the future or Nashville, Tenn. And they perform sci-fi infused rock operas about the battle of good and evil, complete with robots and songs loosely based on a 1980s video game. See and hear for yourself when the Protomen beam into the Biltmore Aug. 29 for an early show. Tickets at Red Cat, Zulu or online at ticketweb.ca.
