Expect plenty of pickin’ and grinnin’ when St. Louis old timey roots act Pokey Lafarge and the South City Three roll up to the Rio for a hootenanny of a show Sept. 1 with guests the Alialujah Choir. I wonder if they’ll be driving an ol’ jalopy with barrels of corn whiskey in the back? Tickets at Highlife Records and the thefestival.bc.ca. More information at riotheatre.ca.
The Fortune Sound Club gets downright soulful as Lee Fields and the Expressions drop by Sept. 1 for an early show. The R&B veteran is enjoying a comeback as of late and is touring in support of his fine new album Faithful Man. Local act the Ballantynes open. We can’t think of a better way to say goodbye to summer than by grazing in the grass at the annual Victory Square Block Party, Sept. 2, 2 to 9 p.m. Hosted by the Sunday Service’s Ryan Beil, the free event features DJs, food carts, raffles and performances by Blue Whistling Horse, Love Cuts, Korean Gut, Manik 1Derful, Too High Crew, Weed, Indian Wars, the Ballantynes and Mode Moderne.
