Picks of the week - July 13, 2012

Now in its 35th year, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival is one of the more pleasant, feel-good events on this city's calendar-so much so, a former Courier writer even got married there. (Personally, we're waiting for the next outdoor concert from Zamfir, master of the pan flute, to get hitched.) By all indications, this year's Folk Fest, July 13 to 15 at Jericho Beach Park, should be as pleasant as ever with warm weather and plenty of fine local and international talent gracing the multiple stages, including Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, the Cave Singers, Veda Hille, K'NAAN, Dan Mangan, Murray McLauchlan, Hey Rosetta! and The Head and the Heart, among others. More info at thefestival.bc.ca.

Ray Davies may not be a dedicated follower of fashion, but the Kinks frontman and whipsmart singer-songwriter is a talented storyteller and tunesmith of the highest order. All of which you probably know if have tickets to Davies' upcoming performance at the Vogue Theatre, July 13, 8 p.m. If not, head over to Zulu, Red Cat or northerntickets.com.
Wanna hear what 10 poets reciting pieces inspired by Prince's Purple Rain while cover band the Weeping Doves plays the entire album front to back sounds like? Dig if you will, the 11th running of Mashed Poetics at The Kozmik Zoo (53 West Broadway) July 13, 8 p.m. Yes, they're even doing "Darling Nikki." Tickets $10 at the door.
Those in need of their Neil Young fix are at risk of overdosing this weekend. On Friday, Jonathan Demme's concert film Neil Young Journeys opens at International Village, while on Sunday, July 15, 7 p.m., the Waldorf Hotel hosts Forever Young: A Neil Young Tribute featuring a slew of local musicians including Bob Sumner, Jenn Bojm, Daniel Pants, Rolla "Rollsy" Olak, Elliot Way, The Passenger, Rich Hope, Tom Anselmi, Holly Russell, Kevin House and others digging into Young's vast songbook, from his solo work to his contributions in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Admission by donation. More info at waldorfhotel.com. And if that isn't enough, you can always head over to our uncle's house where chances are he'll whip out his acoustic guitar and play "Heart of Gold" until you beg him to stop.
