The 28th running of the Vancouver International Fringe Festival promises another mixed bag of do-it-yourself theatre, soul searching solo shows, transcendental spectacles and diamonds in the rough, including Ryan Gladstone looking like an extra from the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” video in No Tweed Too Tight: Another Grant Canyon Mystery. It all goes down Sept. 6 to 16 around Granville Island and satellite venues across the city. For more info, go to vancouverfringe.com.

Vancouver’s only live, televised variety show Paul Anthony’s Talent Time returns from summer break with a humdinger of a shoooooooow Sept. 5, 9 p.m. at the Biltmore. There’s too many guests to mentioned, but we’re particularly stoked about the appearance of a real live bald eagle. Sweet. More info at biltmorecabaret.com.
The last time we saw Redd Kross was in the early ’90s in Victoria with local act Bum and Montreal’s “it” band at the time, the Doughboys. We were fully immersed in the flannel-clad angst coming out of Seattle at the time, but the L.A. band was a breath of fresh air. Their glam-rock inspired power pop, sugary harmonies courtesy of brothers Steve and Jeff McDonald and trashy goofiness reminded us that rock and roll could be fun. After a 15-year-hiatus, the brothers McDonald have resurrected the Redd Kross wagon and roll into the Rickshaw Theatre Sept. 6 in support of their fine new album on Merge records Researching the Blues. Tickets at Red Cat, Scrape, Zulu and liveatrickshaw.com.
Although Christa Couture is an adolescent cancer survivor whose last album was inspired in part by the death of her infant son, her new album The Living Record is anything but glum. In fact, her latest release, as the title would suggest, is brimming with life, and finds the idiosyncratic singer-songwriter weaving her melodic way through lush arrangements that mix folk, bluegrass and a touch of cabaret. Couture performs with special guest SONiA Sept. 6 at St. James Hall. Tickets at Highlife Records and Rufus’ Guitar Shop, online at roguefolk.bc.ca or by calling 604-736-3022.
