Hastings Park
Celebrate the Canada Day long weekend at Hastings Racecourse with live racing July 1 starting at 1:50 p.m.

Young fans will enjoy the family zone, which this year offers pony rides for the kids, while the entire family, couples and individuals will want to check out the Silks Canada Day Buffet. The buffet is served in an enclosed space to allow a break from the sun. For reservations, call 604-216-5273.

Want to eat outside? Besides the many food carts, Hasting Racecourse is hosting a Canada Day backyard barbecue, a casual picnic-style buffet served in the outdoor grandstand patios. For reservations, call 604-216-5204. Visit hastingsracecourse.com for more information. The race track is located on the PNE grounds with parking off Renfrew Street.

Mount Pleasant
The Mount Pleasant Branch of the Vancouver Public Library is hosting Friday Night at the Movies, July 10, with a free screening of Selma.

The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. Selma runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 10, at the Mount Pleasant Library, 1 Kingsway. The event is free but a voucher system will be in place. Call 604-665-3962 for more information.

Also taking place in Mount Pleasant is a caffeine-fuelled event at Caffè Artigiano’s new Main Street location Saturday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Erin Ireland, from To Die For Fine Foods, will be at Caffè Artigiano offering samples of her famous “To Die For” banana bread, which is legendary in this city. Samples of iced coffee and tea will also be available, as well as plenty of prizes and giveaways. So whether you’re a local to the coffee-obsessed Main Street neighbourhood or need an excuse to explore it, drop by the cafe, 4010 Main St., for tasty treat to kick off the weekend.
