Leo Awards 2015: Laughing it up at the second ceremony

The second ceremony in the annual Leo Awards triptych could easily suffer from Middle Child syndrome. The other two ceremonies have much clearer identities.

The second ceremony in the annual Leo Awards triptych could easily suffer from Middle Child syndrome.

The other two ceremonies have much clearer identities. The first ceremony is undeniably dedicated to the off-screen superstars whose technical mastery shepherds scripts from concept to completion.

The third ceremony (which takes place tonight) is the red carpet gala. It’s got splash, flash, the most coveted awards, and the largest concentration of media of any of the nights. It knows exactly who and what it is: the glamorous big sister in the trio.

So where does the second ceremony fit into this mix of celebrations (all of which celebrate achievements in BC-based film and television)?

At first glance, it’s a mish-mash night. Awards are handed out in seemingly unrelated genres like Documentary, Music Video, Animation, Web Series, Information and Lifestyle, Youth and Children’s, and Comedy and Variety.

But last night, the second ceremony – AKA Celebration Awards Two, which unfolded in one of the ballrooms at the Hotel Vancouver – asserted itself to be the most irreverent of the three.

Much of this can be attributed to the co-hosts, comedienne Kalyn Miles and actress-filmmaker Aubrey Arnason, who dished out the laughs and kept the ceremony moving along at an exuberant pace.

The speeches – a good mix of funny and emotional – were intercut by pre-taped interviews in which Miles hilariously grills Leo nominees (rumour has it those interviews will find a home online; if they do, Reel People will let you know).

Read on for the list of winners from the second ceremony. Reel People will be tweeting from the red carpet at tonight’s gala ceremony.
