Top 5 things to do this Friday in Vancouver

Feb. 27, 2015

Get starry-eyed: Toronto-based indie band and occasional Broken Social Scene members Stars play the Vogue in support of their seventh studio album No One Is Lost, no doubt to a much more appreciative crowd then when they played a corporate gig at Rocky Mountaineer Station in front of a bunch of bored-looking office workers a couple of years ago. Newfoundland’s Hey Rosetta! open.

Get French: Festival du Bois, the largest French-Canadian cultural festival west of the Rockies, continues tonight at Coquitlam’s Mackin Park with performances by Les Echos du Pacifique and the Tri-Cities Fusion Gospel Choir. C’est bien du fun.

Get head banging: The music of British heavy metal greats Iron Maiden is paid loving tribute to by a bunch of guys dressed as clowns when Powerclown tonight at Funky Winkerbeans. Just as late Maiden drummer Clive Burr would’ve wanted. Judas Priest cover band Saints in Hell will also get folks moshing with an extended set, although sadly they won’t also be wearing white-face, shiny red noses or wigs.

Get whipped up: Pacific Theatre present the opening night of Matthew Lopez’s drama The Whipping Man, set in Virginia in the aftermath of the American Civil War when slaves are being freed, soldiers are returning home and Passover is being celebrated in Jewish homes.

Get shaping the city’s future: Heritage experts and community builders host a free public discussion on the future of heritage conservation in the City of Glass tonight at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.
