Top 5 things to do this Saturday in Vancouver

June 6, 2015

Get cheering: The Canucks are once again in golf mode but hardcore fans don’t have to settle for cheering for White Rock native Jason Garrison, whose fearsome slapshot is now being put to use by Tampa Bay. The Utica Comets, the NHL’s team’s farm affiliate, play Game 1 of the AHL Calder Cup finals today against the Manchester Monarchs. The team is riding the hot hand of Swedish goalie and newly minted Youtube star Jacob Markstrom, who posted two shutouts of three series-clinching games for the Comets, including a 35-save performance against Oklahoma City in the second round. The 3 p.m. game is being livestreamed at ahl.com.

Meet your man: Former Canucks d-man Jason Garrison isn’t the only White Rocker to potentially watch in action today. Laid-back local boy Daniel Wesley plays the Commodore Ballroom tonight in support of new album I Am Your Man. With guest Joshua Hyslop.

Get levitated: Levitation Festival, the local incarnation of the long-running Austin, Texas freakshow, continues tonight in various venues around the city with sets by The Black Lips, Black Mountain, Dead Moon, The Shine, Mystic Braves, Elephant Stone, Three Wolf Moon, Tacocat, Dada Plan, and The Backhomes.

Get laughing: Comedian and podcast host Nikki Glaser, who just got the good news this week that Comedy Central has greenlighted her sex-themed talk show "Not Safe With Nikki Glaser," will be working blue tonight at Yuk Yuk’s.

Get wasted: Music Waste, which first began as a punk rock antidote to the now-defunct Music West, turns 21 this year, old enough to legally buy a beer down in the States. Tonight’s lineup includes the likes of Wyatt, dumb, Omar Khan, Phantom Head Trip, Malk, Dark Glasses, Old Girl, among many others.
