Top 5 things to do this Tuesday in Vancouver

Feb. 17, 2015

Get transported to a galaxy far, far away: Nerd’s nerd Charles Ross, last seen on Vancouver stages doing his One-Man Lord of the Rings Trilogy, returns with his One-Man Star Wars Trilogy, a show first launched way back in 2002. More fun than all three post-Return of the Jedi films put together, Ross is truly a force of nature as he re-enacts the first three films of the franchise all without props or special effects tonight at Performance Works Theatre.

Get plaid: A less pretentious, more spill-friendly alternative to Dîner en Blanc, the second annual Dîner en Plaid pays tribute to French-Canadian cuisine and beer at an undisclosed location tonight to help raise funds for Maillardville’s upcoming Festival du Bois. Unlike Dîner en Blanc, diners don’t need to bring tables or picnic baskets, just wear their finest plaid or treasured tartan.

Get high: As part of the ongoing Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, the Rio Theatre presents a lecture by mountaineer Linda Bily about her 21-day traverse of the Homathko Icefield, located only 250 km from Vancouver, as well as a screening of the final instalment Teton Gravity Research’s Deeper, Further, Higher trilogy.

Get cringing with embarrassment: It’s been 15 years since adolescence anthropologist Sara Bynoe launched her website about teen angst poetry, and the comic reading series it spawned shows no sign on wanting to move on or shut up already because people just don’t understand how hard it is. Dust off your odes to the tragedy of life without Saint Kurt or why black is truly the best colour as Bynoe hosts another round of participants reading their journals, poems, songs and essays from their awkward years at Cottage Bistro.

Get grinded: British grandfathers of grindcore Napalm Death join Voivod, the pride of Francophone headbangers, for an evening of English/French co-operation and ear-splitting thrash at the Rickshaw Theatre. Additional metal provided by special guests Exhumed, Iron Reagan, Black Crown Initiate and Dayglo Abortions.
