Top 5 things to this Friday in Vancouver

Feb. 13, 2015

Get in on the action: The 18th annual Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival launches tonight at North Van’s Centennial Theatre with a special screening of Melanie Wood’s new documentary Risk and Rescue about the tireless efforts of the volunteer-run North Shore Search and Rescue team, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The launch party will also showcase the winners of the VIMFF’s photo contest and show a second film, The Hand of Franklin, about four men trying to be the first to row the Northwest Passage.

Get in front of the TV: After having narrowly squeaked by bitter rivals the Chicago Blackhawks in OT Wednesday night, the Canucks take on even more bitter rivals when the hated the Boston Bruins return to town. Watch for Zack Kassian to try and maintain his goal-per-game pace since being unchained from Willie Desjardin’s dog house. Or, failing that, hopefully punch Brad Marchand in the head a few times if he feels like it.

Get Smokey: As new wave duo ABC memorably pointed out, when Motown legend Smokey Robinson sings, he soothes it right, makes it out of sight, and so surely everything'll be good in the world tonight when he and the latest version of the Miracles play at the River Rock Casino.

Get radicalized: Filmmaker Peter Jay Brown gives a behinds-the-scenes look at the life aquatic with Captain Paul Watson and his Sea Shepherd Conservation Society crewmates in the documentaty Confessions of an Eco-Terrorist, screening tonight at SFU Harbour Centre. Watson was one of the original founders of Greenpeace who first sailed out of Vancouver in the early '70s, but he eventually split from the pacifist group in favour of a more direct approach to saving the planet and its oceans through his Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, whose extreme tactics have involved ramming and sinking whaling vessels at sea.

Get laughing: Californian standup and @Midnight regular Ali Wong, who describes her style as “naughty Oprah” and specializes in delving into the darker side of personal relationships, helps kick off the Northwest Comedy Fest with sets tonight and tomorrow at Yuk Yuk’s.
