Vancouver film production company Network Entertainment has acquired exclusive rights and started filming a documentary on pop-funk-rock star Sylvester Stewart better known as Sly Stone.

In his early life, Sly Stone was identified as a musical prodigy, mastering guitar, bass, drums and keyboards by the age of 11. He joined a number of bands in high school and later worked as a DJ but is most famous for his work as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone.

“In the annals of pop music, certain artists are more than just innovators and more than just icons. Certain artists are avatars — the manifestation of an idea,” said Network founder and CEO, Derik Murray. “For Sly Stone, that idea was to create a diverse band that embraced a kaleidoscope of musical and cultural styles that stand unparalleled to this day.”

The American artist’s story will be told through classic performances, TV interviews and interviews from those who knew him best. The feature-length documentary will incorporate B-roll, archival footage, and a variety of Sly’s songs will serve as the film’s soundtrack.

“After refusing the spotlight for decades, Sly has finally opened up to share his amazing story on camera about everything: life, love and music,” said veteran television producer, music manager and co-executive producer Ron Weisner.
