To discover happiness, you must walk the path, but you won’t find it at the end of that path. Happiness is not a destination—a place or a time in the future where everything is perfect and when you’ll have everything you want.
You won’t find it behind you in the past, and if you keep looking over your shoulder, the present will soon become the past. You can only live in the present. You can only be happy now.
Happiness is found on the journey itself and in each step along the path. It’s in the beauty you see along the way—the experiences that take your breath away. It’s in your connection with those who walk with you—in giving and receiving, in loving and letting go.
Happiness is in the changing weather along the way—the rain after a long drought, the sun shining through the clouds, the sound of rain, the warmth of the sun, splashing through puddles, jumping in leaves, and walking in fresh snow.
Happiness can be found in each stage along the path—the innocence of a baby, the joy of a toddler, the wonder of a child, the passion of youth, the comfort of midlife, the wisdom of our elders.
Happiness is in living in the moment, finding your own way, finding meaning in each step, and living beyond yourself. It’s in friendship and love, in giving, in forgiving and in giving thanks.
We each walk our own path but we are never really alone. Happiness is in helping and being helped, lifting and being lifted, loving and being loved. It is in appreciating what has been given to you, accepting the challenges of your life, and making the most of your life today.
Beginning today, you can bring greater happiness to your life and the people who are a part of it—at home, at school or at work. It begins with the recognition that we can choose to be happier and have the intention to look at each day in a different way.
If you think you or the people in your life could be happier, why not work together? Form a team with the goal of creating more happiness in your lives and in your community. That’s what I’ll be doing with my Hundred Days to Happiness blog at http://davidicuswong.wordpress.com, facebook.com/davidicus.wong and twitter.com/drdavidicuswong where I’ll suggest exercises and share insights I’ve learned from my patients, family and friends.
