A Burnaby man has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting in Coquitlam Friday night.

Coquitlam RCMP responded to calls of shots fired and a vehicle speeding away from the area of Sylvan Place and Riverview Crescent just after 10 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle, according to police.

He was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which has since taken over the investigation.

IHIT identified the victim as 45-year-old Donald Kelly of Burnaby, and investigators are now looking to the public for information about Kelly’s activities before his death.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted, but there is no evidence as yet to link his death to other recent homicides or reported acts of violence, according to IHIT.

Shortly after Kelly’s shooting, Coquitlam RCMP was notified of a burning dark colored sedan a short distance away in the area of Mariner Way near Dartmoor Drive.

Investigators have determined the burnt vehicle was a 2018 grey Chrysler 300 and would like to speak with anyone that has information about it.

“There are people who have information about what happened. I urge these individuals to come forward and speak with IHIT so that we can hold those responsible to account,” IHIT spokesperson Cpl. Frank Jang said in a press release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448), or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
