Summer is the sweetest time of year in Vancouver, made even sweeter by the creative treats being served up at the Ice Cream Socials every weekend at Beta5.

The chocolatier, ice cream, cream puff, and all manner of treats-maker has come up with a theme for each delicious weekend instalment that will have you whistling a happy tune, for sure. The wildly inventive sundaes Beta5 will have on offer for their Ice Cream Socials are all inspired by pop music.

“We’ve carefully studied the most epic melodies and genres of the past 50 years and designed a one-of-a-kind sundae to pair with each unbelievable moment,” they explain. Plus, they’ll be cranking the era-appropriate tunes in the shop while you’re spooning your ice cream, too.

Beta5 kicked of their 2018 Ice Cream Socials with a visit to the swingin’ 60s over Mother’s Day weekend with their “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” sundae. The 1964 Marvin Gaye Motown hit translated in edible dessert form riffed on the song’s roots in Gospel’s tradition of call and response using “mandarin and grapefruit engaging in a playful call and response with cava and Campari”–in case you are wondering how the heck songs turn into sundaes.

Next up…the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA” sundae that’s got pineapple ice cream and a coconut sorbet base with a miniature chocolate surfboard, crumbly graham cracker “sand” and a cocktail umbrella on top (of course) that they say will take you right to the beach.

The “Surfin’ USA” sundae will be available May 19 and 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Beta5. They’ll be running Ice Cream Socials every weekend through the summer, so check their social media or website for details about what tune and its companion sundae is on deck next.

Beta5 is located at 413 Industrial Avenue in Vancouver.
