Fingers are crossed at Metro Vancouver that in 2018 a bridge for hikers, cyclists and equestrians over the Seymour River is built.

The regional authority issued another request for proposals earlier this month looking for potential firms to build a replacement for the Twin Bridges crossing, washed out following the 2014 rock slide on the Seymour.

Metro came up with rough designs and attempted to get a contractor to do the job in 2017 but the qualified bid was more than double the budget Metro had set aside.

Metro has since tweaked the design and repackaged the RFP with another project to build a new access bridge at the top of Riverside Drive but the timing of the bidding process will probably make the biggest difference, said Mike Mayers, superintendent of environmental management.

“When we went out last time, we were headed right into the busy fisheries window season. That’s when most bridge work gets completed and companies were really busy,” Mayers said.

“We’re hoping by putting it out in December/January, we’re actually ahead of the game.”

The bridge, when completed, will be 2.5 metres wide with railings high enough to safely accommodate cyclists and equestrians.
