Nat Bailey UFO now identified as Space Centre 'hoax'

The H.R. MacMillian Space Centre dispatched a floating orb over right field to draw attention and visitors to its fall programing.

This UFO, a floating orb with blue lights, was seen at Nat Bailey Stadiu Sept. 4 and then again Sept. 9 during the Vancouver Canadians playoffs.

Even during the winner-take-all championship Monday night at Nat Bailey Stadium, attention was drawn away from the game toward the sky above right field.

Not for the first time, the blue lights of a floating orb illuminated the night as it hovered above and just beyond the wall.

UFO watchers got excited, the rest of us scratched our heads. Definitely an unidentified flying object — but alien as well?

Canadians co-owner Jake Kerr couldn't tell reporters what it was. But he was as mesmerized as the rest of us.

The flying object has now been identified. In what they’re calling a “hoax” and an “extreme teaser campaign,” the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre took responsibility for the orb on Tuesday.

“The goal of the faux UFO was to create a buzz about the new planetarium viewer experience at Vanier Park,” the space centre wrote in a news announcement. “The Planetarium Theatre at the Space Centre underwent a half million dollar upgrade this summer."

The orb was seen at Deep Cove, Jericho Beach and at C’s games through the playoffs. A YouTube video of the UFO at Nat Bailey has been viewed more than 216,000 times.

In its own words, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is a non-profit community resource “that brings the wonders of space to Earth, while providing a personal sense of ongoing discovery.”

They’re located at 1100 Chestnut St. near Vanier Park.
