Summer school shouldn’t be for students to re-take courses to get a slightly better mark, but for struggling students who need remedial support, says a reader.

To the editor:

Re: "Summer school attendance figures on the rise," July 11.

At a time when schools in Vancouver are struggling to meet students' and teachers' basic needs, it bothers me that high school students have free access to re-take courses to "seek to achieve a better mark than they

did the first time around." While there is a legitimate need for struggling students to have free access to remedial support, the ministry should fight for a reversal on the ruling that forces this complementary (yet extremely costly) indulgence of the "high achievers."
