Led by San Francisco singer-songwriter Thao Nguyen, who has worked alongside such like-minded musicians as Andrew Bird, Mirah, Laura Veirs and Joanna Newsom, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down brings its ramshackle folk-pop-stylings and Cat Power-esque warble to Fortune Sound Club March 6. Vancity Theatre plays host to the eighth annual Vancouver International Women In Film Festival March 7 to 10, which celebrates the best of women in cinema, including dramas, documentaries and animation. Highlights include Belgian film Little Black Spiders, which is based on a true story and set in a hospital attic where pregnant teenage girls wait to have their babies in secret; Karen Lam's local short The Stolen about a young girl who frees a boy from the clutches of her bullying brother; and Melissa Gomez's documentary Silent Music, which follows a hearing daughter of deaf parents living in the Caribbean paradise of Antigua. Shawn MacDonald directs Egg Theatre's production of Four Dogs and a Bone, March 7 to 16 at Havana Theatre. Written by John Patrick Shanley, the darkly comical play follows the dysfunctional exploits of four showbiz professionals at odds over the fate of a film in production.
