Picks of the week - February 7, 2013

While some people prefer to go the gym or attempt hot yoga for the first time, for our money the best way to feel inadequate about our physical prowess is to take in a few gravity-defying flicks at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. Described as "10 nights of action, adventure and adrenaline," the festival features more than 50 films from 13 countries and nine guest speakers. The equivalent of Viagra to MEC members runs Feb. 8 to 17 at the Rio Theatre, Pacific Cinematheque and North Van's Centennial Theatre. For tickets and info, go to vimff.org.

The Vancouver Comedy Fest begins in earnest this week with a whack of funny men and women hitting local stages. Catch Flight of the Conchords' crazy stalker, 30 Rock's crazy stalker and The Daily Show's non-crazy, non-stalking "Women's Issues Correspondent" Kristen Schaal pulling triple duty with appearances at the festival's opening gala Feb. 8 and two performances at the Comedy MIX Feb. 9. For tickets and info, go to comedyfest.com.
Presented by the First Weekend Club, which helps build audiences for Canadian films, Kim Nguyen's poignant and haunting film Rebelle (War Witch) gets the red carpet treatment when it screens at Vancity Theatre, Feb. 8, 8:30 p.m. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Oscars, Rebelle is the story of a 12-year-old girl in Sub-Saharan Africa who is kidnapped by rebel soldiers and thrown into a horrific life of guerilla warfare.
