Toronto’s Born Ruffians appeared to hit a bump in the road in 2010 when online tastemakers Pitchfork misguidedly trashed the band’s darn fine album Say It with a lowly 3.8 rating. Thankfully Born Ruffians continue to weave its lean and laid-back indie rock spell with a new album out on Yep Roc called Birthmarks and a March 20 show at Fortune Soundclub with The Elwins. Tickets at Red Cat and all Ticketmaster locations.
The sprawling, 18-member strong Turning Point Ensemble performs at the Orpheum Annex March 21 as part of the Sonic Boom Festival. The annual celebration of music by B.C. composers runs March 20 to 24 and includes workshops and performances by guitarist Adrian Verdejo and composer in residence Paul Steenhuisen. For more information, go to vancouverpromusica.ca/sonicboom.
Co-founder and artistic director of Kokoro Dance and the Vancouver International Dance Festival, choreographer Barbara Bourget gives a solo performance inspired by the poetry of Elizabeth Dancoes. A Simple Way runs March 21 to 23 at the Roundhouse Performance Centre as part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival. For tickets and more information, go to vidf.ca or call 604-662-4966.
