A few things about Deer Tick: they hail from Rhode Island, they like to drink, they can rock a captain’s hat like nobody’s business and their raucous folk-rock ways have been compared to Wilco and the Replacements. Oh yeah, and they’re playing the Biltmore May 30 in support of their latest album, Divine Providence. Tickets for the show originally slated for the Commodore will honoured at the Biltmore. Turbo Fruits and The Novaks open. Tickets at Red Cat, Zulu and all Ticketmaster outlets.
Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and Pacific Cinémathèque celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bruce McDonald’s rock ‘n’ roll road movie Highway 61, May 31. The film stars a young Don McKellar as a trumpeter/barber who helps transport a dead body from small town Ontario to New Orleans while being pursued by a man who thinks he’s Satan. Guns, bingo and cameos by Jello Biafra and Art Bergmann ensue. Prior to Highway 61, Pacific Cinémathèque screens Back Down the Highway, a showcase of short films by up-and-coming filmmakers, inspired by McDonald’s seminal feature. For tickets and info, call 604-688-FILM or go to cinematheque.bc.ca.
Never let it be said that Courier employees are above greasing the wheel. And if that wheel happens to be attached to a train loved by said employee’s young son, then so be it. Calling all Thomas fans—Thomas the Tank Engine fans that is. It’s time to climb aboard the beloved children’s train at Railway Heritage Park in Squamish and maybe even meet Sir Topham Hatt. The 17th annual Day Out with Thomas is June 2 and 3 and June 9 and 10. Details at wcra.org (for map and directions). Tickets at ticketweb.com. Choo choooooo!
