Picks of the week - June 6, 2012

The annual independent music and culture festival for discerning tastes and innovative wardrobe combinations Music Waste sounds its barbaric yawp June 7 to 10. Performers include Cloudsplitter, Chris-a-riffic, Apollo Ghosts, Lost Lovers Brigade, Spring Break, Vincent Parker and, to be honest, a heap of bands we've never heard of because we are old and out of touch with the kids. But before all that, singer-songwriter Leah Abramson and her band The Abramson Singers play a Music Waste "soft opening" June 6, 6 p.m. at the Rickshaw Theatre with Joseph Blood. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the WISH drop-in centre. More info at musicwaste.ca.

Every Thursday this month starting June 7, the Powell Street Festival Society and Pacific Cin‚mathŠque present the fourth edition of Kibatsu Cinema, a celebration of the odd and the eccentric in Japanese pop culture and contemporary Japanese film. We've lived in Vancouver long enough to know that the best indication summer is around the corner isn't the weather but the arrival of Bard on the Beach to Vanier Park. This year, the annual outdoor Shakespeare festival takes on Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor, King John and the much-debated The Taming of the Shrew. Is a play about a gentleman who "tames" a headstrong woman into becoming his compliant and obedient bride misogynist or just good fun? Decide for yourself when it opens June 7 and runs until Sept. 22. For tickets and more information, call 604-739-0559 or go to bardonthebeach.org.
Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Tea brings her R&B, soul and piano pop stylings to Cory Weeds Cellar Jazz Club June 7, 8 p.m. For tickets, email reservations@cellarjazz.com or call 604-738-1959.
