Few people confuse Dan Bejar for a jazz musician, but the main dude behind local indie darlings Destroyer does have a weak spot for shimmering saxophone and flute solos as witnessed on the band’s most recent Merge Records release Kaputt. So why shouldn’t Destroyer perform as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. And that’s exactly what the band is going to do June 29 at the Vogue Theatre. From the peeps behind site-specific works The Laundromat and last summer’s theatrical booze-up Party This Weekend comes [un]BOX[ed]. Featuring playwright-actresses Mary J. Eden, Frances Kitson, Diana Squires and Kaitlin Williams under the direction of Katherine Gauthier, the series of four short plays uses the Railway Club stage as its backdrop, transforming the venerable music venue into everything from a yoga studio to a prison, which is kind of what the bar’s old smoking room felt like. It all takes place July 3 to 7, 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets at brownpapertickets.com.
Matchbook Theatre presents the Vancouver premier of Neil LaBute’s Reasons to be Pretty July 3 to 7 at Havana Theatre. Jessica Van Elk directs the wordy tale of four people confronting age-old truths and myths about beauty. Yes, it’s a gentler side of LaBute, who’s known for creating misanthropic characters who treat each other horrendously. Tickets $12 at Havana Theatre. To reserve a seat, email matchboxtheatrevancouver@gmail.com.
