A wise young man once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” That young man was Ferris Bueller, played by a boyish Matthew Broderick. Learn the true meaning of these words as well as how to make your parents think you’re too sick to go to school, when Denman Cinemas screens John Hughes’ classic 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off March 14, 8 p.m. as part of its ’80s Movie Night. Montreal choreographer Sylvain Émard’s latest dance piece, Fragments-Volume I, takes over the Firehall Arts Centre March 14 to 17. According to the press bumph, which sounds eerily like a poem we wrote in college, “Émard establishes four contrasting worlds where the depth and authenticity of gesture convey the complexity and vulnerability of the individual, creating a striking patchwork of insistent urgency.” For tickets and info, call 604-689-0926 or go to firehallartscentre.ca.
Videogames and symphonies… together at last. As you might have guessed, The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses Tour consists of music from Nintendo’s popular video game franchise played by a live orchestra while an overhead video screen shows images from the inaugural recipient of Spike TV’s first ever Video Game Hall of Fame award. High praise indeed. It all goes down March 14 at the Orpheum. Tickets at Ticketmaster outlets.
Associated with San Francisco’s freaky folk scene, singer songwriter Andy Cubic and his band Vetiver are far more laid back and sunshiny than their freaky, hippie-child brethren. Currently touring their fifth album, The Errant Charm, on Sub Pop, Vetiver delivers a warm batch of jangly, folk pop goodness to Electric Owl on March 15. Locals White Ash Falls featuring former members of Red Cedar open. Tickets at Ticketmaster, Red Cat, Zulu records and ticketweb.ca.
