The B.C. Lions take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the newly built Empire Stadium in the team's debut playing in the Western Interprovincial Football Union, which later became part of the Canadian Football League.

Fullback Byron (By) Bailey scored the first touchdown in franchise history after a one-yard run in an eventual 8-6 loss. (Touchdowns were worth five points in those days.) The rookie-laden Lions, named after two North Shore mountain peaks and coached by the late Annis Stukus, finished their inaugural season with a dismal 1-15-0 record.

The city of Vancouver saw its first Grey Cup parade the following year after the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Montreal Alouettes 34-19 at Empire Stadium.

The city’s oldest professional sports franchise won their first of six Grey Cup finals in 1964. Their last was one was in 2011.
