This day in Vancouver history: Nov. 16, 1996
.

In an away game against the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks forward Gino Odjick becomes the team’s all-time penalty minute leader after passing Garth Butcher’s record of 1,668.

The former enforcer and fan favourite eventually reached a potentally unbeatable overall record of 2,217 in 444 games before being traded to the New York Islanders in 1998.  At last count of active players, Alex Burrows, after eight years with the Canucks, is in eighth place with 896. During his 12-year NHL career, "the Algonquin Assassin" also recorded 64 goals, 73 assists and a grand total 2,567 penalty minutes, ranking him 17th overall in the league

Odjick, 44, announced earlier this year he has been diagnosed with the rare terminal disease AL amyloidosis and was only given months left to live.
