Archives: Juno Awards debut in Vancouver

This day in Vancouver history: March 3, 1991

Paul Shaffer emceed the Junos at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre that marked the first time in the annual music industry awards ceremony’s 21-year history it was hosted outside Toronto. Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Celine Dion won for both best female vocalist and best album (Unison), Colin James won for both best single (“Just Came Back”) and best male vocalist while Blue Rodeo was named best group, the Leslie Spit Treeo most promising group, and the Tragically Hip picked as entertainer of the year. Prairie Oyster was named best country group, the late Rita McNeil won for best female country vocalist and George Fox best male country vocalist.

It was also the first time a Juno was handed out for best rap album, with Maestro Fresh-Wes picking up the prize for his eventual double platinum Symphony in Effect. Maestro also picked up a best video award for his single “Drop the Needle,” directed by Joel Goldberg.
