Archives: Russian rookie sets NHL record for game-winners

This day in Vancouver history: March 12, 2002

Russian rookie forward Artem Chubarov scores the first goal in an eventual 5-0 Canucks win over the Nashville Predators, making the former second-round draft pick the first player in NHL history to have his first four goals all be game-winners. Chubarov broke the scoreless tie at 2:26 of the second period when he put a wraparound shot past goalie Mike Dunham.

Nine different players previously shared the record with three game-winners to begin their careers.

Todd Bertuzzi also scored two goals, Brendan Morrison and Henrik Sedin one each, and goaltender Dan Cloutier earned the seventh shutout of his career.

Chubarov went on to score 21 only more during his five-year NHL career. He rejoined his former team Dynamo Moscow during the 2004-2005 lockout and never returned to play in North America.
