A storm blasts southwesternern British Columbia with heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds as high as 160 km/h. Stanley Park was hit especially hard, with roughly10,000 trees knocked down over 41 hectares of forest.

The storm that swept through Stanley Park in 2006 downed thousands of trees, creating views where none had been before.

The seawall was also severely damaged and the park was forced to close for the first time in 40 years.  B.C. Hydro reported that more than 250,000 customers were without power during its peak, and the storm, dubbed the Hanukkah Eve Storm in Washington State, also claimed the lives of an elderly Burnaby couple who  died of carbon monoxide poisoning during the power outage.

Foresters and park board staff had the monumental task of starting the initial clean up after the storm.
