Police and the BC Coroners service are investigating after a body was found in the water near Wreck Beach.

The coast guard was initially called in just before 3 p.m. Monday after a passing boater saw what he believed to be a body in the water some distance off shore from Wreck Beach. The Vancouver Police Department’s marine unit helped recover the body, which was brought to Vanier Park Beach.

University of B.C. RCMP and the BC Coroners service were called in and a sail boat and row boat believed to be associated to the incident were towed to a nearby marina for further investigation.

The RCMP’s major crime unit is working with University RCMP on the investigation, which is still in the preliminary stages.

Police and the Coroners service are working to identify the deceased.

Dawn Roberts, director in charge of B.C. RCMP communications, urged anyone who is aware of someone who was planning a trip out on the water and hasn't been heard from to call their local police department.

More to come.
