Vancouver Courier wins five national newspaper awards

Including first place in the Best Website category and first in arts coverage

The cream of the crop in Canadian community journalism was announced this week and the Vancouver Courier came away with several awards.

The website you're reading this story on came first among all newspapers in the Canadian Community Newspaper Association with a circulation of more than 12,500.

Our team of writers earned top spot in the Best Coverage of the Arts among newspapers with a circulation of more than 10,000. Coming in second was our sister newspaperr, the North Shore News.

Reporter John Kurucz won two individual writing awards for his work.

He took third place in Best Feature Story for his piece looking into the city’s growing polyamory community.

Kurucz’s feature on the 70th anniversary of Grandview Lanes, a family-run bowling alley on Commercial Drive, garnered him a third place win for Best Historical Story.

Kurucz, photographer Dan Toulgoet and video editor Michael Kissinger took third place for Best Multimedia Feature for the online presentation of Kurucz’s profile of watchmaker Fritz Irrgang.
