A GoFundMe page has been started for the three women who lost their home, all of their belongings and their dog, Moon, in a fire late last night.

Quill Christie-Peters, a friend of the women, set up the page to support them.

“These three women are really grounded in the community,” Christie-Peters said. “I thought about everyone showing them how much we love them.”

In only two hours, the page has raised just under $7,000 of the $20,000 dollar goal at the time of writing.

“It’s a testament of how much the community loves them,” Christie-Peters said.

Neighbours heard screaming after a fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at a residence on 12thAvenue near St. Catherines Street.

One of the women was in the home when the fire broke out and was able to get out unharmed, but firefighters on the scene were unable to resuscitate the dog after bringing it outside.

Bec Wonders lives just down the street and was alerted by the screams outside.

“I went out to the alley and the house was completely up in flames,” Wonders said. “There were several explosions.”

A neighbour living in the duplex beside the home also heard explosions and isn’t sure what caused the blaze.

“My best guess is that glass exploded from the heat,” said Jeff, who preferred not to give his last name. “There are lots of windows and a big skylight.”

Roommates Julia Lamare and Julie Mills live two houses down and saw the fire through their windows.

“I thought it was next door,” Mills said.

Lamare was on hold with 911, but other witnesses were able to report the fire before she got through.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
