If you’re a driver and use East First Avenue, now might be a good time to rethink your route. Partial road closures begin next week along East First between Boundary Road and Nanaimo Street to allow Fortis B.C. crews to put in a new gas line.

The utility is replacing 20 kilometres of gas line between Vancouver and Coquitlam. A previously posted schedule had the Vancouver portion of the work beginning May 22, but the latest plan pushes the start date to a week later.

The news was announced in a construction update posted by Fortis B.C. May 22.

“Construction on FortisBC’s natural gas line upgrades will begin on Thursday, May 24 on small sections of Gilmore Avenue and Douglas Road in Burnaby and along East 1st Avenue in Vancouver on Monday, May 28,” the update states.

“This will result in significant lane closures. Some side streets along East 1st will also be closed to control traffic, but main arterials going north and south such as Commercial Drive and Nanaimo Street will remain open.”

Exact dates for the partial and full closures are noted in the chart below.

Fortis BC is also hosting a “coffee chat” at the Drive Coffee Bar, May 24 for those who want to talk about the project in person.

The public can also find information about the plans at talkenergy.ca or via Twitter @FortisBC.
