Kitsilano’s little yellow schoolhouse won’t be facing the wrecking ball just yet.

The Vancouver School Board voted unanimously last night to save the century-old schoolhouse located on the grounds of General Gordon elementary after two hours of presentations from concerned residents and heritage advocates.

However, the plan depends on someone else stepping up to foot the bill. The board will be seeking proposals from groups wanting to use the building who can secure the funds necessary to upgrade and maintain it.

Interested parties have until April 20 to submit their proposals, after which demolition of the schoolhouse will resume.

The yellow arts and crafts style schoolhouse, which sits on the grounds of General Gordon elementary school, was to be replaced by parking slots for the new school being built on the site as part of the district’s ongoing seismic upgrades.

No matter what happens with the schoolhouse, the board assures parents the new school building will be ready to be occupied in time for the start of the 2016-17 school year.
