Want to have your say on the future of Vancouver’s pools, splash parks and other water features? Now’s your chance.

The park board is holding its second round of public consultation on its VanSplash Aquatic Strategy. Three open houses are planned for the coming week — Sept. 27 at Killarney Community Centre (4 to 8 p.m.), Sept. 30 Hillcrest Community Centre (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Oct. 2 at Vancouver Aquatic Centre (4 to 7 p.m.). Residents can also fill out an online survey at until Oct. 8.

In June, the park board received staff recommendations that would see some changes to existing pools, as well as the addition of some new amenities.

The recommendations include:

  • a new outdoor leisure pool at Killarney Community Centre
  • a new outdoor component, possibly a spray park and hot tub, at Britannia Community Centre
  • a new destination natural outdoor pool along the Fraser River
  • a harbour deck in a prominent location

In determining the locations for new outdoor amenities, priority was given to areas where there is currently a gap in services, mainly the south-central and south-east areas of the city.

The report also recommends continued to investment in existing outdoor pools, as well as a review and upgrades to changing rooms, concession stands and food services.

Last summer more than 4,500 residents and 60 groups took part in the first phase of public consultation.

Feedback from the second phase of consultation will be used in crafting a long-term plan for the city’s aquatic facilities. The finalized plan should go back before the board for approval before the end of the year.
