Hole lotta love for Pride doughnut

Rainbow treat benefits A Loving Spoonful

Lucky’s Doughnuts is helping celebrate Pride and raise money for A Loving Spoonful with its limited run of rainbow doughnuts.

Among heavily decorated floats, loud music and energetic dancing, this Sunday’s Pride parade will have a smorgasbord of appetizing food, including a rainbow-coloured Pride doughnut.

Lucky’s Doughnuts —usually exclusively sold at 49th Parallel cafes —is teaming up for the second time this year with A Loving Spoonful, a charity dedicated to helping those struggling with HIV/AIDS. The collaboration will sell special limited-time doughnuts at the Aug. 2 parade.

Each vanilla cream-filled long john or éclair will be topped with a chocolate glaze and rainbow-coloured sprinkles and sold for five bucks a pop. All proceeds raised will go to fund meals for those living with HIV/AIDS.

“I think it’s just a really fun way for people to kind of get involved,” said Lisa Martella, executive director of A Loving Spoonful. “I’ve never heard of a Pride doughnut in Vancouver so I’m not sure if this is the first one or not, but it’s really a fun and exciting initiative that everybody can really be a part of and the price point is really reasonable as well.”

There will be a stand at the Denman Street BMO branch from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. with only 300 doughnuts available at that location. But don’t fret if you don’t make it on time. Baker Colter Jones of Lucky Doughnuts said customers can still get their fill, just go right to the source.

“We do everything onsite at the cafes so it’s easier to get them at the [49th Parallel] cafes. You’ll get one for sure if you stop by,” said Jones.

More doughnuts will be sold at the two official Lucky’s Doughnuts locations at 2198 West Fourth Ave. in Kitsilano and 2902 Main St. in Mount Pleasant throughout the day.

Their goal is to raise at least $2,000, which would provide more than 500 meals to those in need.
