If The Future You did not include having thousands of dollars to get tickets to this week’s TED Talks in Vancouver, there are a few less expensive options — but fewer than there were in previous years.
This year, TED Talks is taking a more “cinematic approach” to broadcasting its sold-out sessions, which take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre from April 24 to 27.
For instance, the Vancouver Public Library will not be offering free screenings at any of its branches. You can, however, apply for limited spots at the West Vancouver Memorial Library.
Four theatres in the Lower Mainland are offering big-screen highlights presentations. Tickets are around $23 and are available here. The screenings are:
Opening Event
Mon., Apr. 24, 8 p.m.: The kickoff to the week-long TED conference. The speakers are: Huang Yi, dancer and choreographer; Joshua Roman, cellist, Anab Jain, futurist, designer; Laura Galante, cyberspace analyst; Titus Kaphar, artist; Garry Kasparov, grandmaster, analyst; Tim Ferriss; productivity guru, author; band OK Go; and religious leader Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks.120 minutes
TED Prize Event
Tues., Apr. 25, 8 p.m.: Watch tennis icon Serena Williams, acclaimed healthcare reformer Atul Gawande, plus a surprise talk from one of the world's most revered figures before the $1 million TED Prize is awarded for a world-changing idea.The other speakers are: journalist Gayle King; Anna Rosling Rönnlund, co-founder of Gapminder; Jon Boogz + Lil Buck; movement artists and physician Raj Panjabi. 120 minutes
Highlights Exclusive
Sun., Apr. 30, 4 p.m.: This exclusive show, created just for cinema audiences, highlights the best moments from the TED2017 conference. The program will include a new interview with Elon Musk about what an exciting future looks like, among other TED Talks and performances from the week. 120 minutes
The four theatres offering the screenings are: The Park Theatre, 3440 Cambie St.; Cineplex Odeon Park & Tilford; 333 Brooksbank Ave., North Vancouver; and SilverCity Metropolis Cinemas, 4700 Kingsway Ave., Burnaby.
