Man in critical condition after being hit by police vehicle in Squamish

A man is in critical condition in hospital after being hit by a police cruiser, Squamish RCMP say.

On March 13 at approximately 10:30 p.m., an officer with the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services travelling in a grey unmarked SUV was involved in a crash with the male pedestrian at the intersection of Highway 99 and Garibaldi Way, Squamish RCMP said in a news release.

The RCMP officer, who was working but not responding to a call, notified dispatch of the incident and began to provide medical assistance.

Emergency Health Services (EHS) attended the scene and the male pedestrian was transported immediately to hospital.

The male in his late 20s remains in hospital in critical condition.  No other persons were injured.

Integrated Collision and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) members were on scene and traffic was re-directed for a few hours.

Highway traffic is no longer affected.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been contacted and is investigating the accident.

This investigation unit is brought in to conduct investigations involving officer-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether or not an officer may have committed an offence

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
