Gr. 10 Coquitlam student Alfred Wong was an innocent passerby caught in in gunfight in Vancouver Jan. 13.

Family, friends and a community touched by the senseless death of a Coquitlam teenager will gather this morning for his funeral.

Fifteen-year-old Alfred Wong was killed by a stray bullet when his family was driving home on East Broadway Jan. 13 after dinner with his older brother.

Vancouver police say assailants were firing at each other and the Wong vehicle got caught in the crossfire. A 23-year-old man, Kevin Whiteside, was also killed. Whiteside's death is believed to be a targeted shooting.

Alfred was a Grade 10 student at Pinetree secondary with aspirations to study electrical engineering. The family's pastor, Choi, describes him as a “bright young man who excelled at his studies” and who was “passionate about every cause.”

The teen's funeral is Sat., Jan. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Coquitlam Alliance Church, 2601 Spuraway Ave., Coquitlam. Those who attend are asked not to take photos or videos inside the church during the service.

The Alfred Y.F. Wong Memorial Scholarship has been established with School District 43 for a deserving Pinetree secondary school graduate “who is pursuing a post-secondary education with a focus on engineering and who embodies what we most admired in Alfred: his curiosity, determination, academic excellence and achievement in all areas of life.”
