Six Vancouver NDP MLAs have been given cabinet posts in Premier John Horgan’s government.

Horgan announced his entire cabinet Tuesday.

The six Vancouver ministers are:

·       David Eby (Vancouver-Point Grey), attorney general.

·       George Heyman (Vancouver-Fairview), minister of environment and climate change strategy.

·       Adrian Dix (Vancouver-Kingsway), minister of health.

·       Shane Simpson (Vancouver-Hastings), minister of social development and poverty reduction.

·       George Chow (Vancouver-Fraserview), minister of state for trade.

·       Melanie Mark (Vancouver-Mount Pleasant), minister of advanced education, skills and training.

Mable Elmore (Vancouver-Kensington) was appointed parliamentary secretary for poverty reduction and will work closely with Simpson on the portfolio.

The new cabinet comprises 20 ministers and two ministers of state. In addition, six MLAs have been named parliamentary secretaries. Horgan’s cabinet is the first in B.C. history to achieve gender parity, with 10 women named to cabinet and one named minister of state.

New ministries include the ministry of Indigenous relations and reconciliation led by Scott Fraser (Alberni-Pacific Rim) and the ministry of mental health and addictions, which will be overseen by Judy Darcy (New Westminster).

In a news release, Horgan promised to "put people at the heart of everything we do. And we'll work hard to deliver on our commitments to British Columbians."

Outgoing Housing Minister Rich Coleman, the Liberal MLA for Fort Langley-Aldergrove, took to Twitter shortly after Horgan announced his cabinet, saying "This #GreeNDP government was not recognized by the majority BC & will pander to minority interest at the expense of the majority."
