It’s Canada Day, which means it’s time to celebrate Canada’s favourite holiday: the first day of NHL free agency!

With the buyout of Chris Higgins, the Canucks have over $10 million in capspace, more than enough to sign any free agent who is willing to come to Vancouver. That’s both exciting and absolutely terrifying, as free agency is where teams can make their biggest mistakes and handcuff the franchise for years to come with a millstone of a contract.

The Canucks are hoping to land a scoring winger and it apparently won’t be Milan Lucic. Everyone assumes they’re targeting Loui Eriksson, but there are other options, like Kyle Okposo, Andrew Ladd, or Troy Brouwer.

Also, there’s Mason Raymond, Raffi Torres, or Michael Grabner and I hear Chris Higgins is available.

We’re here to liveblog the frenzy or lack thereof. In past years we’ve done liveblogs in various formats. With the Vancouver Courier’s blogging platform, our best option is to do our liveblogging in the comments themselves.

So, scroll down to the comments and join in the conversation. The Disqus commenting platform will let you know whenever there’s a new comment to read. Harrison and I will be making snap judgements on every deal, making fun of the number of superfluous analysts in the TSN studio, and probably updating you on our breakfast and lunch choices.

Seriously, though, TSN will have 18 people on their broadcast team. Not one of them will be a woman. No room on the team for even one token woman, but there’s totally room for John Scott. Sigh.

In the words of my favourite sociopath in clown makeup, “Here we go.”
