The NEB has come out in favour of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.

A petition calling on the Government of Canada to stop its plan to purchase the Trans Mountain pipeline received more than 2,600 signatures in less than 24 hours.

The electronic petition was created by North Saanich resident Harald Hommel on the House of Commons’ official website. By 4:22 p.m. on Friday (June 1), exactly 24 hours after it was open for signatures, 2,670 people had added their name to it.

The majority of the signatures come from B.C. (1,671), followed by Ontario (581) and Quebec (97).

The signatories are demanding that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau halt his plan to buy the controversial pipeline from Kinder Morgan for $4.5 billion and take on additional costs to go ahead with the planned twinning of the project.

The petition is sponsored by Elizabeth May, Green Party of Canada leader and MP for Saanich—Gulf Islands.
