The men's and women's finals of the Vancouver Open were stacked with national team beach volleyball players Sunday at Kitsilano Beach.
Maverick Hatch reclaimed the championship he won in 2011. Along with fellow national team player, Sam Schachter, they came back after losing the first set to beat Maciej Zbyszewski, a two-time national champion, and yet another Team Canada player Chaim Schalk 20-22, 21-18, 15-10.
World U-21 silver medalist and former Canadian champion Melissa Humana-Paredes won gold with her partner Taylor Pischke in an exciting, back-and-forth women's final. They defeated Vancouver's Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas, both who are carded members of Canada's beach volleyball team, 21-18, 16-21, 15-13.
The Vancouver Open featured a full serving of national team players in a year when the country is sending men's and women's teams to the Summer Games. Canada's volleyball Olympians are training oversees to prepare for London and weren't at Kitsilano Beach but the men's pair, Christian Redmann and Ben Saxton, are both previous winners of the Vancouver Open although they played and won separately.
The Canadian youth and senior national beach volleyball championships will be held at Spanish Banks Aug. 17 to 19.
