As part of the yearlong Vancouver Special neighbourhood series, the Courier visited the tony enclave of Shaughnessy and took a tour of the Edwardian mansion and home of the University Women’s Club, Hycroft.

The Edwardian mansion known as “Hycroft” has been a fixture in Shaughnessy for more than 100 years. Built between 1909 and 1911 for businessman and politician Alexander Duncan McRae, Hycroft became a hot spot for visiting royalty and the city’s upper crust during the 1920s and ’30s. The palatial estate served as a veterans’ hospital during the 1940s and ’50s and has been home to the University Women’s Club since 1962. UWC Vancouver president Louise Corrall took the Courier on a tour of Hycroft and sang the praises of the women-only club, which she says is always looking for new members.
