South Carolina’s Ranky Tanky perform original and traditional music from the Afro-American Gullah tradition, a Creole culture that developed in isolation along the East Coast. Although veteran musicians they only released their debut as a group in 2017.

A son jarocho band from Veracruz, Mexico, Son de Madera keep alive a regional folk music that developed over centuries.
DAKHABRAKHA
Created by avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi for productions at the Kyiv Centre of Contemporary Art in 2004, the group’s music combines Ukraine folk songs with elements from other world traditions. DakhaBrakha will perform at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this weekend including a set on the Main Stage at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 14. They will also participate in a Saturday morning workshop, called “Sing It Like You Mean It,” with Dálava and Quantum Tangle on Stage 3.

Americana roots legend Ry Cooder makes a rare appearance in Vancouver in support of his new album, The Prodigal Son, he produced with his son Joachim, who will also perform.
DÁLAVA
Guitarist Aram Bajakian and vocalist Julia Ulehla pay homage to traditional Moravian folk music in their work. Their album, The Book of Transfigurations, is available on Songlines Recordings.

GAMELAN BIKE BIKE
West Coast ensemble, began out of a Gamelan Gita Asmara art installation that used found instruments, plays new music for gamelan on hand-crafted instruments made by sound artist/composer George Rahi.
