Sooke RCMP officers are upset after discovering that several bags of bottles and cans they collected to fundraise for children and families affected by childhood cancer have been stolen.

Officers have been collecting the refundables for the Cops for Cancer ride on Vancouver Island, and volunteers have been sorting through bags of bottles and cans to ready the items for donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

On Thursday, volunteers noticed at least eight large plastic bags of cans were missing from the fenced compound where they were kept.

“We’ve reviewed the video footage from the area in an effort to try and identify a suspect,” said Sgt. Clayton Wiebe of the Sooke RCMP.

“The money from these bottles and cans was going to a cause that we all here have strong feelings for. Yeah I’d say we’re pretty upset by this theft.”

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Sooke RCMP at 250-642-5241.
