A 33-year-old Cobble Hill man died Friday evening after an ATV crash on a backcountry road near Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP said the man was with a group riding ATVs on a service road about 18 kilometres off of Nanaimo Lakes Road when there was a crash around 9:30 p.m.

Police, paramedics and search-and-rescue crews responded, using GPS information obtained by pinging cellphones to locate the group in the remote area.

Nanaimo search-and-rescue members performed first aid for β€œan extended period of time,” police said, but the man did not survive.

Based on statements provided by the other riders, police said the death appears to be accidental.

The family has been notified and the B.C. Coroners Service is investigating. β€” Times Colonist
