A six-year-old girl was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a pickup truck as she tried to cross a Nanaimo street.

Nanaimo RCMP said the incident occurred about 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Dunbar Road and Metral Drive.

The girl remained in hospital overnight Wednesday and was expected to be released soon.

Preliminary findings indicate that the girl was travelling in her family’s van when her mother pulled over and stopped on the north side of Dunbar. At that point the girl got out of the car and began to cross the street when she was struck by the westbound pickup.

The 42-year-old pickup driver stopped and joined others in giving emergency first aid until paramedics arrived.

Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as factors, while video of the incident was obtained by canvassing businesses in the area for surveillance footage.

Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services is offering its services.

Anyone who has dashcam video of the incident and has not talked to police is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
